A LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR

We have been overwhelmed by the support and positive feedback received since the close of our most recent Bars to Business course with HMP Portland. Upon receiving this letter, we felt it fitting to share as it, as it represents a different ‘Tale from Behind the Door’, this time one from the Governor.

Dear,

I write in my role as the Governor of HMP Portland which is a Category C prison specialising in Young Adults (age 18 – 25).  As part of our Young Adult strategy we have had the great fortune of being able to link in with Sam and Will from the 100 and First foundation in order to trial their innovative approach to changing lives via real world training, real life experience and providing future focus.

In my 30 years of working within prison I have observed many rehabilitative programmes designed to reduce the risk of reoffending.  It is my absolute belief that the work being developed and completed by 100 and First is the most innovative, tangible and practical approach to providing personal change opportunities for those in custody that I have witnessed in this time.

I have already recommended the foundation to the Young Adult strategic lead for the Prison Service and following a presentation from Sam and Will there was much excitement and enthusiasm for how their approach could be developed and shared with the many different needs of those in our care, including the female estate.

I would without hesitation encourage and support any agency wanting to work with the 100 and First foundation in the future, and would be happy to speak with individual’s to explain the positive impact they are having on those in custody at Portland.

Regards,

Robert Luxford

As the summer draws closer, we will be kicking off our sport-based course Be Rock Solid. This course sees 20 lads come together, get challenged to stay together, to make progress together. Progress comes through a powerful curriculum of life lessons, reinforced by the experiences gained whilst working together to become a successful rugby team.
